1. German-Jewish Dialogue
Thursday, August 7, 2008, 6:30pm
245 East 40th St (entrance 2nd Ave @ 40th Str.), Party Lounge 35th floor

We would like to invite you to an informal "German-Jewish-Dialogue" discussion with Ms. Irene Runge. Ms Runge, a journalist for a Berlin Jewish newspaper (Jüdische Zeitung) and publicist, will speak about Jewish life in Berlin.

Ms Runge has a very special relationship to both America and Germany: Born in New York City to German parents, she went back to East Germany at the age of seven and later studied sociology and economics at Humboldt University there. Before becoming a chairperson and cofounder of the "Jüdischer Kulturverein Berlin e.V." (Association for Jewish culture in Berlin), Ms. Runge was a member of the Jewish community of East Berlin and established the network Wir für uns (Jews for Jews).

She is an expert on Jewish life in Germany, and would like to share and discuss her experiences and present challenges with young American Jews and young Germans living in New York.

Please join us in the Lounge of Cornelia's apartment building in Midtown (Archstone Murray Hill) We will also serve drinks and snacks!

Cornelia's mobile: 646-9329577

As space is limited, please let me know as soon as possible if you can come (acceptances only). First come, first serve.

Best,

Lena Altman (ACCESS), Cornelia Jarasch (German Consulate), Steffi Pfalz (JCC Manhatten)

2. THE SIX MILLION PLAN - INFORMATIONAL GATHERING
Tuesday, August 12, 2008, 8pm
Jewish Enrichment Center -- 38 West 13th Street (btwn 5th & 6th)

Background: In the next two minutes, I would like to describe for you what we have in mind to achieve, and invite you to join us in achieving it. Thank you for giving us your time and consideration.

We have four goals, and they are in no particular order:

- to ensure the Holocaust is never forgotten
- to create within people a pro-active, energizing post-museum relationship to the Holocaust
- to end genocide
- to unify the Jewish people to a cause that honors the Holocaust victims and improves the world

Starting with the most ambitious of these goals and deconstructing along logical steps we can ask ourselves how does one stop genocide. Well, if you can stop one genocide, it's reasonable the same process can be repeated and you can stop them all. How then do you stop one? It would seem reasonable that one person cannot, but 47,000 members of the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force, setting up six cities of refuge within an area where a genocide has been initiated can stop one. Okay. Now how do you get the Marines to set up these cities of refuge?

First, we get a 'Genocide Law' passed by Congress that mandates Congress to vote within forty-eight hours of a genocide being declared on whether to send the troops. They are not required to send them, just required to vote on whether to send them. Second, we need to convince Congress to vote to send the troops. So how do we achieve both of these steps? Well, if we had two million people rally in Washington on the days both are up for discussion, that would probably be enough political pressure to make that happen.

Getting two million people who care enough to go to Washington will be difficult, very difficult. However, it just may be that getting six million to go will be easier. That is correct. It will be easier to get six million, The Six Million.

How is that? Well, let's say we got one and only one person to represent each victim in the Holocaust, and that we gave each of these 'stewards' the name, picture -- as large as possible -- and story if possible of this victim. We then say to them: 'Look, of all the people in the world, you are the only one representing this child who was killed, now you yourself may want to go to the rally in Washington because you feel strongly about genocide, but the person you represent, this boy named Isaaq, aged twelve, or this young mother Rachel, aged 22 -- he or she has to go. If you don't represent them, no one will -- and they and their picture will stay home that day. So bring this picture to Washington, and each of the six million will be there, and in an irony of ironies, not only will the victims themselves live on -- but they will be the ones who will make sure it never happens to anyone ever again.'

We believe that for many Jewish people the emotional connection between themselves and the victims of the Holocaust is so visceral, so strong that they will simply not allow a victim's memory or life to be forgotten. We believe there will be many more who will want to remember the victims of other genocides in history, and that many of them will join this effort for the same reasons. We therefore believe that there will be six million people who will commit to representing a unique victim at a rally in Washington.

For a moment can you imagine how it will look when all the pictures are raised in the air at once? They, the victims of the Holocaust themselves will be united together for the first time in history! It's about time we gave everyone of the victims a voice, and we let them speak, and they will say -- 'Never Again!' Can you imagine!?

So the only questions now are ..Will you be a steward holding a picture in the air or will you stay home? Will you be there on the day the world ended genocide? Will you?

Thank you again for your consideration, and please join us.

We're having an informational meeting on August 12 to discuss the plan, and to show our supporters the extent to which our students are into us launching it. In this respect it is very important that we get 120+ to come that evening. Mr Bernard Gotfryd a survivor and others will be addressing the group.

Rabbi Yaacov Deyo deyo@jeconline.com.

2. From Ruth Messinger, President, AJWS:

This summer AJWS is intensifying our work to bring an end to the genocide in Darfur. Recognizing that humanitarian aid is crucial but will not stop the genocide, AJWS is also engaged in an intense advocacy campaign to halt the crisis.

Over the last four years I have spoken to tens of thousands of people about the ongoing conflict in the region. When I have posed the question: "What will you say when your grandchildren ask, where were you during the genocide against the people of Darfur?" people have responded by attending demonstrations, organizing their communities, urging their elected officials to speak out, and giving money. But this has not been enough to stop the violence.

Today, as the Olympics approach, the world spotlight is on China, whose economic and political support for Sudan continues to underwrite the violence in Darfur. AJWS, along with the entire anti-genocide movement, is using this window of opportunity to raise awareness about the links between China and the government of Sudan, and to increase the pressure on those who have a role to play in ending the violence, including the U.S. government, U.N. Security Council members and mutual funds, as well as corporate sponsors of the Olympics such as NBC and Coca-Cola.

Over the coming weeks, please look out for a series of "Did You Know?" e-mails from AJWS. Each message will contain concrete suggestions for actions you can take in the run up to the Olympic Games to help bring an end to the genocide. We must let China and others guilty of failing to do their part to stop the genocide in Darfur know that we are watching them, and holding them accountable.

Sincerely,

Ruth Messinger
President, AJWS

3. A search, from Fiona Gardner, a photographer in NYC:

I am a photographer in New York City. I am doing a book on former miss subways. A selection from the project appeared in the New York Times. See the link below.

http://www.nytimes.com/slideshow/2007/12/29/nyregion/thecity/20071230_MISSSUBWAYS_SLIDESHOW_index.html

One of the former miss subways that I am looking for Elizabeth Stern is a Holocaust survivor. I am contacting your organization in the hopes that you might be able to help me find her.

I have attached a jpeg of her Miss Subways poster. On the poster it says that she was born in Warsaw Poland in 1939 and arrived at Idlewild airport in new york on Nov 15, 1959.

I contacted the Office of homeland security and they had an INS-foreign address and occupation index card for a woman named Janina E. Stern that was born in Poland in 1939 and arrived on Nov 15 1959. The archivist there thought that it is a very good chance that the person I am looking for is Janina Elizabeth Stern. Stern would have been her family name and she very likely got married and changed her last name.

I appreciate your assistance in tracking down Elizabeth Stern.

You can reach me by phone 917-664-9036 in addition to fionagardner@gmail.com.

8. About "Sala's Gift":

The power of the written word to sustain life is a theme of Letters to Sala: A Young Woman's Life in Nazi Labor Camps, a compelling collection of rare Holocaust-era letters and photographs that are part of the collections of The New York Public Library. The items - from a young girl's diary to handwritten postcards to photographs to official documents - were saved at great personal risk by Sala Garncarz from the time she entered a Nazi labor camp in 1940 until her liberation in 1945. The collection provides a remarkable first-hand view of the human drama that unfolded among Jewish victims forced to work as slave laborers.

In the hands of Ann Kirschner, Sala's daughter, these documents also form the basis of one of the most moving, inspiring, and eye-opening Holocaust stories in decades. SALA'S GIFT: My Mother's Holocaust Story captures the horror of Sala's astonishing odyssey through the Nazi labor camps-which are far less understood than the extermination camps-and deftly weaves the letters into a compelling narrative.

For the first time, SALA'S GIFT will be translated into Polish and German and available in bookstores on May 13, 2008. The Polish edition, Listy z pudeka. Sekret Mojej Mamy, will be published by AMF Plus. The German edition, Salas Geheimnis Die Geschichte Meiner Mutter, will be published by S. Fischer Verlag.

Letters to Sala, a striking exhibition reproducing the letters, postcards, photographs, and documents, will also come to Poland this summer. Curated by Jill Vexler, Letters to Sala will travel to the Galicia Jewish Museum in Krakow, Poland from JUNE 28 through AUGUST 31, 2008. The exhibition will open at the Galicia Jewish Museum during the annual Jewish Festival in Krakow. For more information about Letters to Sala in Poland, contact Kate Craddy at the Galicia Jewish Museum: 0048 12 421 68 42, kate@galiciajewishmuseum.org

12. YAD VASHEM'S PHOTO ARCHIVE GOES ONLINE:

Senior staff at Yad Vashem, who subscribe to this email list, ask me to make public the following:

Marking Holocaust Remembrance Day, Yad Vashem, the Holocaust remembrance and education center in Jerusalem, will today (May 1) upload its entire photo archives to www.yadvashem.org. These include 130,000 photographs and images, comprising the largest collection of its kind in the world, and form part of the ongoing efforts by Yad Vashem and other organizations to stem the worldwide growth of Holocaust denial and revisionism. Six million Jews were murdered in the Holocaust.

These images include photographs taken in ghettos, during deportations, in slave labor and death camps and at liberation and more. They are designed to be used by historians, educators, writers, filmmakers and the public at large. The photographs come from a variety of sources, including official archives, private collections, museums and various historic collections.

YAD VASHEM LAUNCHES YOUTUBE CHANNELS

Yad Vashem has also launched two YouTube channels to coincide with Holocaust Remembrance Day, and in a further effort to combat Holocaust denial and misinformation, which is rife on the Internet. The channels, in English and Arabic, went live today.

The English channel contains testimonies from Holocaust survivors, including archival footage, historians, lectures on key issues related to the Holocaust, footage from visits to Yad Vashem, including those of President George W. Bush in January 2008, and Pope John Paul II in March 2000, as well as human interest stories, such as family reunions.

The Arabic channel has testimonies and archival footage about the Holocaust, with Arabic subtitles. There is an introduction on the importance of knowing about the Holocaust by Prince Hassan of Jordan, the brother of the former King Hussein.

The channels are dynamic, and new videos will be added frequently. Channels in additional languages will be launched soon. The Yad Vashem Channels can be seen in English here and in Arabic here. Google and YouTube both volunteered to help Yad Vashem set up the new channels.

14. News about WHAT'S GOING ON IN LITHUANIA right now, and a subsequent petition:

From a friend of 3GNY, Naava Piatka:

A few of the last remaining Vilna Holocaust survivors, one being the former chairman of Yad Vashem, who fled the Vilna Ghetto during the war to become partisans in the forest-- are now being investigated for alleged war crimes by the government of Lithuania. This seems to be a reactive defence strategy to deflect an investigation into Lithuania's own past culpability in allowing more than 90% of their Jewish population to be exterminated under Nazi occupation.

This to me, seems like a huge travesty of justice, and further outrageous insult to past injury to these few Holocaust survivors who have surely suffered enough. Let's make our voices of protest heard by a barrage of emails this week to the Lithuanian ambassador in Washington, DC. I have further collected information on this matter if you care to read more...but for now, here's the recent Forward article:

http://www.forward.com/articles/13704/

Please take a moment to join those of us who care about the dignity of the last remaining Holocaust survivors by emailing the following petition to: audrius.bruzga@ltembassyus.org

Subject line: STOP THE UNJUST INVESTIGATION OF HOLOCAUST SURVIVORS in LITHUANIA!
(Please bcc me at express4success@yahoo.com, so I can tally the response.)

Dear Ambassador Bruzga,

I am writing in support of the petition below:

This petition is on behalf of Holocaust survivors, their descendants and others who consider the partisans of World War II as heroes. We urge you to immediately cease the investigation into alleged war crimes by Jewish partisans in Lithuania.

This probe seems obviously anti-Semitic and victimizes brave men and women who fought for the freedom of all Lithuanians from totalitarian Fascism, causing them further undue suffering. The concept of turning partisans into war criminals is contrary to the professed ideals of the new Lithuania or any European country that is a member of the European Union.

Signed:

1. DARING TO RESIST: JEWISH DEFIANCE IN THE HOLOCAUST
On view through September 14, 2008
Museum of Jewish Heritage -- A Living Memorial to the Holocaust
36 Battery Place, New York, NY

During the Holocaust, Jews throughout Europe, through individual and collective acts of resistance, sought to undermine the Nazi goal of the annihilation of the Jewish people. Jews engaged in a range of resistance activities with the aim of preserving Jewish life and dignity despite unimaginable difficulties. Their efforts powerfully refute the popular perception that Jews were passive victims.

Through testimony, archival footage, and authentic artifacts, the exhibition will help visitors to understand the dilemmas that Jews faced under impossible circumstances. Whether praying clandestinely, documenting the experiences of Jews in the ghettos, or taking up arms to fight, these responses took many forms, but each and every one was a courageous act of resistance.
